Virtual MD is a program in Alberta that enables some Health Link 811 callers talk to a doctor by phone or video about their immediate health concerns. It helps people get the care they need in a timely manner.
Virtual MD staff will determine the most appropriate type of care, which may be virtual, referral to a PCN or direction to the nearest emergency department. This makes it easier for more people to get the care they need and helps reduce pressure on the healthcare system.
When you call Health Link 811, a registered nurse will assess your situation, determine how urgent your situation is and what level of care you need (this is called triage). If you need to speak with a doctor, you may be referred to the Virtual MD program.

Health Link 811 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If needed, a registered nurse can refer you to the Virtual MD program between 6:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m., every day of the week.
If the Virtual MD doctor thinks you need in-person care, they can direct you to the right place – like an urgent care clinic, a family doctor or the emergency department.
