Virtual MD

Virtual MD connects Health Link 811 callers directly to physicians by phone or video.

What is Virtual MD?

Virtual MD is a program in Alberta that enables some Health Link 811 callers talk to a doctor by phone or video about their immediate health concerns. It helps people get the care they need in a timely manner.

Virtual MD staff will determine the most appropriate type of care, which may be virtual, referral to a PCN or direction to the nearest emergency department. This makes it easier for more people to get the care they need and helps reduce pressure on the healthcare system.

Virtual MD

How it works

When you call Health Link 811, a registered nurse will assess your situation, determine how urgent your situation is and what level of care you need (this is called triage). If you need to speak with a doctor, you may be referred to the Virtual MD program.

Not everyone is eligible, but if you are, the virtual doctor can:

  • assess, diagnose and provide medical advice
  • order tests like stool or urine tests to help diagnose conditions like urinary tract infections
  • write prescriptions
Hours of operation:

Health Link 811 is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If needed, a registered nurse can refer you to the Virtual MD program between 6:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m., every day of the week.

How Virtual MD helps

  • Keeps people out of the emergency room
Some patients get the care they need through Virtual MD, so they don’t have to go to the emergency department.
  • Makes it easier to see a doctor
It helps people – especially in rural areas or without a family doctor – get care by phone or video.
  • Eases pressure on the healthcare system
Virtual care helps reduce the strain on emergency departments and clinics, so more people can get help when they need it.
  • Shares the visit notes with your family doctor
Keeps your family doctor informed about your care and medical conditions so they can follow up with you if ongoing treatment or monitoring is needed.

Referrals

If the Virtual MD doctor thinks you need in-person care, they can direct you to the right place – like an urgent care clinic, a family doctor or the emergency department.
