Healthcare for newcomers

For most health concerns, primary care is your first step. This includes family doctors, nurse practitioners and other providers who help with everyday health needs like:

  • Checkups and advice when you’re sick or injured
  • Prescriptions and medication refills
  • Managing long-term health conditions like diabetes or asthma
  • Mental health concerns
  • Referrals for specialists, tests or other services if needed
Newcomers to Alberta, whether from other parts of Canada or other countries, are eligible for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP).

Steps to get started

STEP 1

Apply for an Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP)

To get your healthcare card and be covered for insured health services in Alberta, you must be registered with the AHCIP. This applies to new, returning and temporary residents. This card lets you get free health care through the public system.
