ALBERTA – As the days get warmer, the risks related to sun exposure also increase. May is Melanoma Awareness Month and Primary Care Alberta would like to remind Albertans of all ages to stay sun-safe while working or playing outdoors.
Melanoma is a type of skin cancer where abnormal skin cells grow out of control. It’s the most serious type of skin cancer and fifth most diagnosed cancer in Alberta. Approximately 65 per cent of melanoma cases are linked to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun and artificial tanning beds.
The best way to prevent melanoma and other types of skin cancer is to practice sun safety:
Melanoma can spread quickly to other parts of the body but is often curable if detected early. Most melanomas show up as a new spot or skin growth. A monthly head-to-toe self-check is recommended to remain aware of any changes to your skin. Use a full-length mirror and a hand mirror for the harder to see places, like your scalp or back.
